Deadpool: Should You Put This on Your Hitlist

A superhero with a perverse sense of humor is out for revenge. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll bathe in blood” – Ethan Sacks, New York Daily News

The newest Valentine’s Day movie is unlike most other Valentine’s Day feature films. The eccentric film directed by Tim Miller takes a different twist on the stereotypical superhero movie. It focuses on the most popular anti hero the Marvel universe has ever seen, Deadpool.

Deadpool aka. Wayde Wilson is a mercenary whose only allegiance is with money. He is ready to do anything as long as he gets paid for it. Wilson gained the title of “Merc with a Mouth” due to his predisposition for snarky comments and sarcastic statements. Deadpool has accumulated quite a large cult following due to his constant comedic moments and his carefree attitude. In the movie (likewise in the comics) Wayde Wilson is diagnosed with cancer and leaves his wife in an attempt to save her from the pain. However, in his endeavour to be rid of cancer, he is entangled in a shady “clinic” and is horribly disfigured. Though now he does not have cancer, he believes that his wife will no longer love him with his “old avocado” of a face.

The long awaited movie has racked up a whopping $619.3 million dollars in the box office since its debut on the silver screen on February 14th (Valentine’s Day), and has had generally very positive reviews. The movie has been highly complimented for its display of Deadpool’s character by giving him a more vulnerable side that many people can relate to. Though his snarky comments and guns usually hide his vulnerable side, it still manages to shine through and put Wilson in a nice light.

Ryan Reynold’s smart-talking Deadpool has pulled people in with its renowned comedic appeal. Marvel fans have always loved Deadpool. His self-awareness character not only allows him to know that he is in a comic book, but also makes for many funny interactions with other non self-aware characters.

Although the Deadpool movie has always been a risky subject due to his random focus, his movie has been incredibly successful and I believe that a sequel is in order!
